Appleは本日リリースされた「iOS 11.3」の最新ベータ版で、バッテリーの状態を表示し、バッテリーの交換が必要な場合はそれを推奨する新機能を搭載しました。

この「バッテリーの状態」では、ピークパフォーマンスをダイナミックに管理することで突然のシャットダウンを防ぐパフォーマンス管理機能がオンになっているかどうかをユーザ自身が確認し、それをオフにすることも可能にします。
この機能は、iPhone 6、iPhone 6 Plus、iPhone 6s、iPhone 6s Plus、iPhone SE、iPhone 7、iPhone 7 Plusに搭載されます。
それでは、最新のiPhone XやiPhone8ではどうなのでしょうか。
Appleは次のように説明しています。
iPhone 8、iPhone 8 Plus、iPhone X の各モデルは、ハードウェア面でもソフトウェア面でもより進化した設計になっているため、必要とされる電力とバッテリーの給電性能の双方をより正確に見積もり、システム全体のパフォーマスを最大限に引き出せるようになっています。これにより、異なるパフォーマンス管理システムが可能となり、iOS が突然のシャットダウンをより正確に予測し、回避できます。その結果、iPhone 8、iPhone 8 Plus、iPhone X のほうがパフォーマンス管理の影響が目立ちにくいかもしれません。しかしどの iPhone モデルであっても、時間の経過とともに充電式バッテリーの容量やピークパフォーマンスは低下し、いずれは交換が必要になることに変わりはありません。
また、Appleは米国上院議員によるバッテリー問題の調査において次のような回答をしました。
Q: Does Apple plan to release a similar software update feature to throttle back processing performance for newer phone models? What notice does it plan to provide to customers before doing so?
Apple: All iPhone models have basic performance management to ensure that the battery and overall system operates as designed and internal components are protected. And, in the case of hot temperature, the performance management ensures that the device stays within safety limits. Such basic performance management is required for safety and expected function, and cannot be turned off.
iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X models include hardware updates that allow a more advanced performance management system that more precisely allows iOS to anticipate and avoid an unexpected shutdown.
より新しいiPhoneにパフォーマンスを低下させる今回のような新機能を搭載するのか、また、その前にユーザーに知らせる予定か、という問いに対して、Appleは、すべてのiPhoneモデルに基本的なパフォーマンス管理機能が搭載されており、たとえば温度上昇などでデバイスが安全な状態を保つようにパフォーマンスを管理すると回答しています。そして、iPhone 8/8 Plus、iPhone Xは、予期せぬシャットダウンをより正確に予測して回避する更に進化したパフォーマンス管理システムを可能にするアップデートされたハードウェアを含んでいると説明しています。
