Windows7、Vista、XPからWindows8へのアップグレードについて、Microsoftがパートナー企業に伝えた情報が出ています。
VR-Zone.comによれば、アップグレード条件は次のようになります。
- Users upgrading to Windows 8 from Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic or Home Premium will be able to maintain their existing Windows settings, files and applications.
- Users upgrading to Windows 8 Pro from any Windows 7 edition will be able to maintain all existing settings, files, and applications.
- Users upgrading to Windows 8 Enterprise (which will only be available to volume licensees with Software Assurance contracts) from Windows 7 Professional or Enterprise will be able to maintain all settings, files and applications.
- If upgrading from Windows Vista, only personal files will be maintained, unless SP1 is installed, in which case system settings will also be maintained.
- Users can upgrade from Windows XP with SP3 installed, but only personal files will be maintained.
- Windows7 Starter、Home Basic、Home Premium → Windows8：Windowsの設定、ファイル、ソフトウェアを維持したままアップグレード可能
- Windows7 各エディション → Windows8 Pro：Windowsの設定、ファイル、ソフトウェアを移行可能
- Windows7 Professional、Enterprise → Windows8 Enterprise：：Windowsの設定、ファイル、ソフトウェアを移行可能
- Windows Vista SP1未適用 → Windows8：個人ファイルのみ引き継がれる
- Windows Vista SP1適用済 → Windows8：システム設定も維持しアップグレード可能
- XP SP3 → Windows8：個人用ファイルのみ移行可能
その他の条件ではすべてフォーマットが必要となるとのこと。異なる言語間のアップグレード、異なるアーキテクチャへの移行が該当します。つまり、英語版から日本語版へなど言語が違う場合、32bit版から64bit版へなどの場合は上記のように移行前の情報を引き継げないようです（「Windows 8 Setupを使うことで、異なる言語間でのインストール実行中に個人ファイル／データを維持できる」ともCNET Japanは書いています）。
